Schindler initially saw the war as a business opportunity. Over time, he risked his life bribing and outwitting the SS to keep about 1,200 Jewish workers alive.

Less about Schindler the man than about Kraków itself between 1939 and 1945 — recreated streets, propaganda films, a corridor papered with Nazi flags, Schindler's preserved office at the end. It is heavy, and pairs hard with an Auschwitz morning, so leave a day between. Tickets are timed-entry and capped; book at least four days ahead.

Watch: Schindler's List, Spielberg's Oscar-winning 1993 film about the man and the factory this museum preserves, is in the library.
