A cloth-trading market has stood in this exact spot since the 14th century. The Renaissance arcades came after a 1555 fire; the 19th century added the loggias on the sides.

A working medieval trade hall — the building dates from the 14th century, the current Renaissance facade from the 1550s — and it's still doing its original job, selling textiles and amber. Quality varies stall to stall, so price-compare a few before buying amber, and check it's certified Baltic. Upstairs is the lovely (and underrated) Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Painting, part of the National Museum.
