Etter Distillery (Zug)
Cherries have been grown by Lake Zug for at least 600 years, and the first cherry distilleries appeared in 1846. Etter, founded in 1870, distils five different Kirsch spirits from local cherries alone.
Lucerne sits on the doorstep of Switzerland's cherry country. The hills around Lake Zug have grown cherries for centuries, and Etter, a family distillery founded in 1870, is the region's most celebrated name: its Zuger Kirsch carries an AOP designation, the spirits equivalent of a protected wine appellation. Alongside the Kirsch they make Williams pear, Vieille Prune (plum), and even a Swiss single malt (JOHNETT).
Getting there: Zug is about 30 minutes from Lucerne by train, then a 5-minute walk from the Zug-Chollermüli stop on the S1. The showroom and shop are open on weekday and Saturday hours; guided plant tours and tasting events run by arrangement, so contact them ahead if you want the full behind-the-scenes visit rather than just the shop.
A note for the group: this is a tasting-focused stop, squarely a treat for the cherry-brandy curious. The showroom is browsable for everyone, and it pairs naturally with a wander around Zug's pretty lakefront old town if you make the trip.
