Behind the painted houses, the 600-year-old Musegg Wall still stands with nine of its original towers. The clock tower strikes the hour one minute before every other clock in town.
Cross the Chapel Bridge into the old town and you're immediately in a cluster of squares — Weinmarkt, Hirschenplatz, Kornmarkt — ringed by buildings whose facades are painted top to bottom with 15th- to 19th-century murals of saints, guildsmen, and local legends. Pop into the Bucherer flagship at Schwanenplatz 5 if anyone wants to look at Rolexes; this is the world's biggest Bucherer.
