Built as a temporary exhibit for the 1889 World's Fair and almost demolished in 1909 — radio antennas on the top saved it.

The icon. Three observation levels. The summit views are spectacular but the second-floor views are arguably better for picking out landmarks.

Sparkle: Every hour on the hour after dark, the tower sparkles for five minutes — best viewed from across the river at the Trocadéro.

Hot tip: the Champ de Mars lawn at the foot of the tower is a wonderful spot for a casual picnic dinner.
