Municipal House (Obecní dům)
Independent Czechoslovakia was proclaimed from this building on 28 October 1918. The Lord Mayor's Hall inside was decorated by Alfons Mucha, the master of Art Nouveau.
Built between 1905 and 1911, this is Prague's foremost Art Nouveau landmark, and it sits right on Náměstí Republiky, a minute from our hotel and attached to the Powder Tower. The glittering Smetana Hall inside is one of the city's main concert venues and hosts the opening of the Prague Spring music festival; the Lord Mayor's Hall was decorated by Alfons Mucha.
You can see two of it without a ticket: the ground-floor café and the restaurant are open to anyone, and the café (chandeliers, marble, brass) is a destination in its own right for a coffee and a pastry. To see the grand halls upstairs you take a guided tour (about an hour, several a day).
A very easy add given it is on the doorstep: pop in for coffee even if you skip the tour.
